Audio Dump: A Cast of Thousands in the Men’s Skiathlon

Date:

By Gavin Kentch

Lukas Pigott and Noah Eckstein were working hard at the venue today. We’ll have more athlete quotes added into the main race article at some point, promise.

To tide you over until then, here is some audio from today. Lots of audio. I started with the English interviews first, on the theory that, for the average reader of this site, your Norwegian may not go much past tusen takk or dobbeldans. Or #reklame, “advertisement,” if you spend as much time on ski Instagram as I do.

… but if you do speak Norwegian, one of the boys brought back a solid 11 minutes with head coach Eirik Myhr Nossum and athlete Simen Hegstad Krüger. Norway swept the podium today, I trust you are aware, so Nossum probably has some thoughts worth listening to.

N.b., a mixed zone can be noisy under the best of circumstances, and having the crowds attendant to a world champs in Norway as background noise does not exactly help with audibility. This is why we call it raw audio. That said, there are some definite gems in here, and Muzzy in particular is not to be missed (shoutout to Nordic Insights staffer Devin Ward, currently based in London, for previously teaching me the meaning of “faffing around”). Plus, not to exoticize, but the Australian accent of Bentley Walker Broose is not unpleasant on the ears. Enjoy.

You’re reading this on Nordic Insights, one man’s labor of love dedicated to publicizing American nordic skiing. Last season’s GoFundMe is literally the only reason why I turned a profit in years one and two of Nordic Insights, and in turn the only reason why there is a year three of Nordic Insights for you to be reading now: I was okay with working for very little money to get this love letter to American cross-country skiing off the ground, but I didn’t want to lose money for the privilege of doing so. If you would like to support what remains a brutally shoestring operation, last season’s GoFundMe may be found here. Thank you for your consideration, and, especially, for reading.

    • Great feedback, thanks. Today was a long day for me – I was racing myself in Anchorage and am pretty destroyed right now – but I can get some more audio up tomorrow from the women’s skiathlon. Honestly not that many people viewed this story total so I wasn’t sure if I should bother, but I definitely value the feedback and will put up more going forward.
